There is a reason (well plenty) why 49ers fans want no parts of Mac Jones, and honestly, it is super justified. The big reason is actually pretty simple. It’s that Mac Jones feels like more of the same for the organization.
Since Steve Young left, the organization has been in a weird spot at the quarterback position. They haven’t quite been able to get it right for longer than a couple years, and even then they haven’t had an elite guy since. Jeff Garcia was good for a minute, as was Alex Smith and Kaepernick had a good run for a bit. Garoppolo had one good year and two injured ones. Other than that, nothing good. Nobody wants to be reminded of guys like David Carr, Blaine Gabbert and Brian Hoyer. The instability at the position and the inability to find another star to lead them for 15 years has been the biggest flaw this organization has exhibited the last two decades.
Mac Jones just feels like more of the same, as I said . A rather unremarkable player from a talent perspective that simply just doesn’t look the part of star QB for 15 years that’ll win Super Bowls. Could be a solid but not spectacular starter for a bit, but that is no different from what they’ve had every now and again for the last 20 years.
This point is heightened by the fact that when you see Jones play and hear scouting reports, it seems he’s eerily similar to their incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Replacing the guy they have with the same guy playing-wise won’t go over well with fans because it just feels like they will continue to spin their tires at the most important position in football for another couple years before having to address it once again. This cycle has been vicious for the faithful and they are very worried they’ll get stuck in it once again.
The potential of drafting a guy with super talent, more talent than any QB they have had since Young, is an exciting proposition for the fans and would ease a lot of the stress that consumes them. It would provide hope that this dark cloud over the position is finally making way for the sun. The potential to add a guy like Jones would do the exact opposite. It would feel like another glimmer of hope has been taken away from them again.
No draft pick is guaranteed. Fields or Lance could be bad. That’s possible. But I do believe they’ll get a better chance than Jones. Is it fair, not necessarily, but this is how the fans have been conditioned by the events of the last 20 years. They expect more. They expect to have a team that’s always competing for Lombardi’s. They have the right to that. All fanbases do. The 49ers can’t afford to screw up this pick, especially if it’s Jones.
