We should all be familiar with Rodriguez. He dawned a Pirates uniform in 2015 and 2016. He had a particularly good year in 2016, boasting a strong .270/.349/.510 slash line with 18 HRs and a wRC+ of 129. This was strong enough for him to earn a 2 year deal with the Braves. Pirates were reportedly trying to sign him and trade Harrison this offseason. He hasn't played much this season after getting in a car accident in the winter, but he's just getting back into the groove of things. Sean Rodriguez will likely slide into a utility role with the Pirates, much like he did before and will be allowed to face lefties a bunch as he mashes them.
Connor Joe, a former comp pick after the first round, hasn't quite stuck. He's learned a multitude of different positions and hasn't been able to find his footing. He was depth in the Pirates system, and both teams hope he can blossom with a change of scenery and new coaching that could be just right for him.
For both teams, this trade makes sense. Pirates needed some help on the bench, and the emergence of Camargo for Atlanta, along with Freeman playing some third base because of Matt Adams, made Rodriguez expendable. Braves get a prospect they can work with a bit and figure out something nobody else could. Both teams got what they wanted out of this deal, and it seems like a fair deal for both sides.
