Many possibilities exist for the 49ers at pick 13

The 49ers acquired the 13th pick in the draft as we all know. Now with the draft in a week and a half, we await what they are going to do with it. 

After doing a lot of study and going through many mock drafts, I have figured out that this draft is set up very nicely for the 49ers at pick 13. 

Their biggest needs in this draft are offensive tackle, wide receiver, defensive tackle and cornerback. At pick 13, they should have their choice of top options at those positions. 

The reason for this is going to be because of the QB situation. It’s a certainty that three QBs will get taken before pick 13, maybe even four. This will push things down a bit. 

Another reason for this is because of the level of prospects at positions of needs for them. It’s a great WR class. It’s also a great offensive tackle class at the top. And there are two very good defensive tackles. There’s also a good corner that will be there at 13 if all else fails. 

It will just be a matter of how it all falls. 3 QBs, Chase Young, Jeff Okudah and Isaiah Simmons will make up quite possibly the top six picks. After that there’ll still be the big 3 WRs, 4 big OTs and both big DTs on the board, and a CB. That’s ten players that fit well and only six picks left until the 49ers select. 

Any way you slice it in this scenario, there’ll be a good player at a position of need when they pick. Whether that’s OT, WR or DT or CB is up to how things fall after that and how the 49ers rank the remaining players on their big board. They have a real chance to be sitting there at 13 with the good situation on their hands of being able to take the best player available on the board that also just so happens to fill a need. 

If they don’t have an OT left they love, maybe they go WR or DT. If the WRs they like are gone, OT or DT could be an option. If multiple positions are gone, they just pivot and go to the best available at the other position which could be the best player left on the board still. Worst-case scenario, they take the one very top CB left on the board, not that it’s as big a need as the other three positions. Still an option however. 

There is one more scenario. Say Jordan Love falls to 13. This could put the 49ers in an ideal trade-down spot if they see value in doing that (and trading down to a team in need of a QB is always a good move unless there’s a can’t-miss player on the board, which won’t be the case at pick 13). 49ers have zero picks in rounds 2, 3 or 4 this year. A trade down could solve that. A trade down option wouldn’t have to exist just for Love though. It could be for anyone. But that’d be the best trade down option out there. Love going ahead of pick 13 would help the 49ers too though as the 4th QB going before they pick would push more other talent to them that wasn’t expected. 

13 is pretty much the perfect pick the 49ers can have in this draft, probably another reason they pushed that trade. They knew this pick was greatly positioned for them to do almost anything and still wind up with something they really like. It’s hard, if not impossible, to find a scenario where the 49ers get to pick 13 with no options and nowhere to turn. No matter what happens ahead of them, they will have something there they need and want or will have a scenario where they can gain more advantage from the pick by trading it.
